The title of this post is a quote from a movie. One of George Clooney’s finest films, in fact. And one of my favourites It includes gems like the Product Placement sequence copied almost wholesale in Wayne’s World, “Have you seen the special effect? Show them the special effect!” and “These are gardeners and caretakers, not Tomato Men.”
Yep, it’s “Return of the Killer Tomatoes”. A movie that spectacularly fails to take itself seriously in any way, shape or form. And for that I love it. The fourth wall is broken so many times it might as well not be there, the film crew spend almost as much time on-screen as the rest of the cast and it’s beautifully written. Okay, so the F/X are very low-budget but then it was made in the 1980s and CGI is, mercifully, absent. The low-budget effects are so deliberately low-budget you wonder how much it actually cost them..
I love movies that know they’re movies and don’t care. They play on the audience’s expectations of what’s going to happen and give them just what they want, when they want it. “Last Action Hero” with it’s “I wonder if you could help me test a hypothesis…” scene, “Airplane” with the sly looks to camera. “Spaceballs” and “Ooooh, nice cross-fade.”
If you’re planning on buying only 1 movie to add to your collection for Halloween, go with “Cabin in the Woods.” If you’re going to get 2, definitely get “Return of the Killer Tomatoes”.
