On the 6th January, I received an email from another John – one far more famous and musically capable than I – John Anealio. It was his newsletter. He’s set himself a challenge this year, to release (at least) 23 new pieces of music in 2013. You can read about the challenge, what lead up to it, and so on, over on his blog, Sci-Fi Songs.
He then challenged his followers on Twitter, those who receive his Newsletter, to join him. To do something similar. To take up the challenge to produce 23 new pieces of work – art, short stories, poems, whatever – in 2013.
Fast-forward a couple of days and I see several people tweeting about a new book – “You’ll Never Believe a Man Can Fly”, by Lee ‘Budgie’ Barnett. You can find him on Twitter and the book on his blog here. He’s releasing the blog Dickens-style, a chapter at a time over the weeks to come. I’ve read the first 5 and had to get the eBook.
All very good, but what has this got to do with me?
Back in November, I started writing for NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. I’ve done it in the past – and succeeded. This time, I fell short by the thick end of 10,000 words, but I’ve got the bulk of the story straight in my head and I want to get this story finished and out there. So, starting Monday and continuing every 2 weeks or so, a new chapter of what is currently called “Second-Hand Hero” will be published here on the blog.
I reckon 23 chapters is a good number to work to.

Best of fortunes with your writing project – may the words always do what you want them to, and the ideas come at your bidding.
