    Every year, on the last Tuesday in January, people flock to the Shetland Islands to witness what has been described as one of the top 10 winter festivals in the world.  It’s getting bigger every year, helped by the coverage it’s starting to get on the BBC – and not just in the local news “And Finally…” sections.

    Up Helly A’ (or Aa, depending on who you talk to) is a grand old (Victorian) Viking tradition, created by the Temperance League, that replaced the massively more dangerous tradition of rolling lit barrels of tar through the streets in the 1880s.  For a far fuller history, consult Wikipedia.  I first saw this madness in 2003 and have seen it, or it’s effects, yearly since.

    What most people don’t realise is that (a) this isn’t the only Up Helly A’ held in Shetland.  It’s the biggest, yes, but it’s only the Lerwick Up Helly A’.  Others are held all around the islands beginning with Scalloway much earlier in January (where they push the boat out into the bay and burn it – as seen on Blue Peter) and finishing with the South Mainland Up Helly A’ (the newest) some time in March.  (b) Not everyone dresses up as Vikings.  Only the Jarl Squad (the head honcho for the year, big cheese, whatever you wish) gets to dress in these splendid, hand-crafted outfits.  No Weta-Workshops clever plastic mail for these guys, it’s leather, metal, sheepskin, the real deal, and the workmanship is magnificent.  Oh, but the others do get to dress up!  Of the 963 “Guizers” this year, a paltry 57 were proper Vikings.  The other 906 were SWAT team members, Trows (Trolls), in drag of one form or another – it’s all men and men only for the Lerwick Up Helly A’, Bikers, pink rabbits (don’t ask), apes, Del Boy, Rodney, boxers…  47 squads and only 1 squad of Vikings.

    Events are held throughout the day.  The Jarl Squad processes through the town to the dulcet tones of a brass band (playing the theme from the A-Team for some reason that no doubt makes sense to the Jarl), tourists and locals alike filling the streets to get a good close look at the outfits.  All the shops have window displays of past Jarl Squad costumes, you can spend a happy few hours examining each in turn.  They really are spectacular.  As an aside, I saw the Weta exhibition one year at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.  The level of detailing on these costumes exceeds that done for Theoden and Gimli’s costumes.

    There’s a Junior Squad as well, they do their full procession and boat-burning in the early evening.  Then at half-seven, in the freezing streets, the signal goes up and the massed ranks light their torches.

    They then march through the streets, singing the Up Helly A’ song (it’s bound to be on You Tube but I’ve heard it so much these last few days I’ll let you find it yourself), finally gathering in the centre of town around the boat where they take months of workmanship, intricate craftsmanship, stunning carving, and burn it.

    There’s something incredibly powerful, primal about this.  It’s one of the most spectacular things I’ve seen.  Even more amazing is how few injuries there are and that we don’t have a specialist burns unit on-hand for when things go wrong.  It’s incredibly well choreographed.  And yes, that’s the kids playground in the front of that picture.  It was still there when I passed today.

    And that’s the end of the procession – but just the beginning of the celebrations…  Y’see now everyone get the kids in bed and those that are off to one of the 11 Halls dotted around town get glammed up for a night of feasting, dancing and general entertainment.  While the men dress up as Vikings (and other things), the ladies of the town have been very busy indeed.

    For the first time since we came to Shetland in 2003 we went out to one of these halls – the Anderson High School.  You can buy tickets to the Town Hall, but “only tourists do that.”  My wife was offered tickets to the Anderson and who are we to turn down an offer like that?  Each squad, following some pre-determined sequence, visits each hall and it’s considered bad form if all 47 squads haven’t got around all 11 halls by Wednesday at 7AM.  We bailed out at half 5, finally declaring full of the fantastic spread of food laid on, finished with the endless tea and coffee available, and having seen all bar about the last half-dozen squads perform.  That’s right, perform.  Each squad has an act to entertain the guests of the hall, followed by a dance or two from a resident ceilidh band – in our case, Da Fustra (YouTube them, it’s worth it if you like accordion/fiddle music).  In no particular order (and missing out loads as there were far too many to remember), we had…

    • Pink rabbits dancing around a huge phallic symbol
    • Trows sort-of dancing
    • Monkeys performing The Lazy Song (complete with a rather skilled trombonist)
    • Aerobic-class grannies
    • Strumphosentatz (YouTube again, this was genius)
    • A dancing SWAT team controlled by a computer hacker in a coat rather like mine

    • A couple of odd local-politics satire skits (Bremner, Bird and Fortune have nothing to worry about)
    • Smurfs
    • A team of decent M.C. Hammer tribute acts
    • The Jarl Squad themselves (singing “Enjoy Yourself (It’s later than you think!)”
    • An Arabian Nights-themed squad performing a bed-of-nails and levitation trick
    • A squad who performed the T-Mobile Royal Wedding superbly
    • A squad of sharp-dressed men in black suits and hats, Madness-style, accompanied by the group Bombskare.  These guys stayed and performed a couple of numbers for everyone – and I mean everyone – in the hall to dance to.  Bombskare then went on to play a concert in Lerwick last night.  I would’ve gone but I was, as they say at home, neither use to man nor beast.  I’ll catch them next time they’re up here.

    And there was more!  Much, much, more.  Some of the acts were more cryptic in their meanings than others.  The computer hacker was a news story from last year where the Met swooped in to arrest an alleged member of Anonymous without informing the Sheriff, Northern Constabulary or anyone else local – that was genius, they’d choreographed their routine brilliantly, danced it superbly and finished it off to the tune of The Bill with a lone Met Copper making the arrest.  Think the “Cuban Pete” routine from “The Mask” where he’s got the police all dancing to his tune and you’re not far from the mark, only they hit half a dozen different pop videos during their number.  Others weren’t so clear to me – in some respects I’ve still got an outsider’s eyes to local politics.  When you did understand what a Squad was doing it was akin to solving a clue in the Times Cryptic Crossword.

    Anyway.  2 days later and I’m still feeling the effects.  I’m tired, happy, and my coat still smells of the paraffin they use on the torches.

    Is it worth coming to Shetland to see it?  Bloody hell, yes!  We had guests this year and they were blown away.  Was it worth going to a hall?  Hell, yes!  Might do it again next year, depends on being able to get a babysitter.  After all, everyone local seems to be busy that night…

    Oh, and they start them young up here.  The Jarl’s brother knows he’s going to be Guizer Jarl soon – 2019 to be precise.  But all the schools and nurseries have their own little Up Helly A’s.  Here’s my own Jarl.

  • Random Wednesday – You know you’re really a parent when…

    I had an epiphany the other day.  I worked out when it was I really became a parent.

    Yes, being there at the birth following 9 months of my wife’s pregnancy was a clue, as was the presence of this baby they allowed me to take home from hospital with her.  Strange, surreal days full of not enough sleep and far too much Medieval on the PSOne (hey, first-time on paternity leave, not a lot to do for those first 2 weeks).  But it wasn’t until a few years and a couple more kids later that it twigged.  And I was reminded of it again the other night.

    Picture the scene.  It’s 1AM, you’re with your mates, you’ve been drinking and eating.  One of you throws up.  Now – and I can’t explain this – the human mind is practically hard-wired to join in whenever you see, hear or smell someone vomiting.  You can feel your own gag reflex going, you know that you’re about to see whatever it was you had for dinner all over again.

    Now.  Picture the scene.  It’s 1AM, you’re woken by the sound of one of your kids throwing up.  If you’re lucky, it’s in the bathroom where you can wipe everything down.  More likely, they’re sat on the side of the bed decorating the floor.  Some kind of parent reflex kicks in!  You don’t join in, you don’t feel remotely nauseous.  Somehow you and your partner calmly multitask – getting the kid to the bathroom, cleaning them up, calming them down; stripping the bed, knowing on an almost instinctive level just how much bedding you need to change – just the quilt cover? total strip-the-bed-and-rebuild-from-scratch-including-fresh-quilt?; identifying the patches on the floor that need cleaning and the toys/books that are going to be either cleaned or chucked.

    This isn’t something that you build up to gradually, I remember dealing with the first incident just as calmly as the most recent.  You even find yourself mentally working out how digested the stuff was you’re cleaning up/washing off to get an idea of how sick they are!  The most recent one was, in case anyone’s interested, a case of eyes-bigger-than-belly coupled with said kid’s determination to finish everything on his plate.  A noble and laudable aim and we certainly didn’t insist he did so.

    Oh, and you really know you’re a parent when you can trade stories like this as dinner party conversation.

  • Psst! Want to loose weight? Got a solution for you…

    Every year, I start off needing to loose a few kilos.  And every year, by the end of March, I’m at my target weight.  The diet I’m on has only 1 genuine restriction but apart from that one you can eat absolutely anything you like.

    The restriction?  No alcohol.

    The diet?  (I swear I’m going to patent this…)  Eat Less and Exercise More.

    Got that?  Step 1:  Eat Less.

    Seriously, that’s all there is to it.  Quit the snacking that plagues the evening and means you’re effectively pouring money into your local supermarket/off-license/Pizza Hut/kebab shop.  Work out just how much a week you’re spending on snacks at the moment and then translate that into a big pot of money to spend when you hit your target weight.  Chances are you’ll need to spend it on clothes that actually fit, but if you don’t then you’ve probably paid for a PS3, a month of your mortgage or that new iPod you’ve been after.

    So, tips for eating less:

    • Drink lots of water.  Pints of the stuff.  Yes, you’ve got to return it sometime, but it’s a cheap filler.
    • Swap your usual plate for something smaller.  I’m on a side-plate right now.  And don’t go back for seconds no matter how much you make.  Have some for lunch the next day or put it in the fridge for later in the week.
    • Have meals at regular times.  And do, for the love of Pete, remember to eat lunch.
    • Drink coffee.  5 calories a cup, apparently, and it’s an appetite suppressant.  I’m in IT.  My working days are fuelled by good coffee.  And I heard today that the proper coffee machine is being plumbed back in in our staff canteen!  Happy days!
    • If you want a Mars bar, have one!  But nothing else for that meal.

    Step 2: Exercise More.

    Every day, do something.  Floor exercises – sit-ups, leg lifts, press-ups.  You don’t have to do many, but 5 minutes spent doing that every day will soon reap benefits.

    Get out into the fresh air and walk/jog/run.  If the weather’s up to it.  You can have some great times jogging in a force-10 northerly, but usually only when it’s pushing you up the hill you’d normally struggle to do.  Having to turn round and go home into said wind is not much fun.  If you don’t run, get on a bike.  It’s low-impact, doesn’t damage your knees as much.  Park further from work/the station then walk the rest of the way.  Obviously this last doesn’t work if you work from home but you could always walk around the block a bit.  Get a dog if you need an excuse – the money you’re not paying for snacks should cover food and vet’s bills.

    Do both of these steps for a couple of weeks and you’ll really notice a difference.  Do it for a couple of months and you’ll loose a lot of weight.  Once you’re at your target, relax the diet a little – go for that second portion of lasagne, have a beer (but not both seconds and beer).  Go for maintenance rather than loss.

    Yes, it’s all common sense and yes, it needs willpower.  But it works.
